Laser Hair Removal Results Not as Expected? 7 Common Reasons Why

Laser Hair Removal

“I’ve done six sessions and I’m still seeing hair” is one of the most common things I hear from patients who’ve had laser hair reduction elsewhere before coming to RasaDerm.

And almost every time, the laser itself isn’t the problem the way it was used, or the expectations going in, are.

Laser hair removal is one of the most effective long-term hair reduction treatments available today, but it’s also one of the most misunderstood.

Results depend on a combination of biology, technology, and consistency and when any one of those is off, patients walk away disappointed by a treatment that, done correctly, genuinely works.

Here are the seven reasons I see most often when laser hair removal results fall short of expectations.

1. Not Enough Laser Hair Removal Sessions

This is, by far, the most common reason. Hair grows in three cycles anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting) and laser can only effectively target hair that’s in the active anagen phase, when the follicle has enough pigment for the laser to lock onto.

At any given time, only a portion of your body’s hair is in that phase.

That’s why laser hair removal isn’t a one-or-two-session treatment. Most areas genuinely need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, to catch hair across multiple growth cycles.

Patients who stop after two or three sessions because they’ve seen “some” reduction are often stopping right before the treatment would have caught the next wave of dormant follicles.

2. Inconsistent Session Intervals

Spacing matters as much as the number of sessions. If sessions are too far apart, follicles that were resting during earlier treatments cycle into growth and out again without ever being caught.

If they’re too close together, you’re treating hair that hasn’t had time to re-enter an active phase, which wastes a session without adding benefit.

I always build a session calendar with patients rather than leaving it to “whenever you’re free”  the interval is doing real clinical work, not just filling time.

3. Using a Laser That Isn’t Matched to Your Skin and Hair Type

This is where technology makes a real difference, and it’s one of the biggest gaps I see when patients come to us after unsatisfactory treatment elsewhere.

Older or single-wavelength lasers are calibrated for a narrower range of skin tones and hair colours. On deeper skin types, or fine and lighter hair, they simply don’t deliver enough targeted energy to disable the follicle so hair grows back finer, but it grows back.

This is part of why we invested in the Special Edition of the Alma Soprano Titanium at RasaDerm to my knowledge, we’re the only clinic in NCR offering this particular platform.

It combines three wavelengths (755nm, 810nm, and 1064nm) delivered simultaneously through its Trio MAX applicator, which means it’s treating multiple tissue depths and hair types in the same pass, rather than compromising on one wavelength for everyone.

For patients with darker skin tones or finer hair where laser hair removal effectiveness is traditionally harder to achieve this makes a measurable difference.

4. Hormonal Hair Growth Isn’t Being Accounted For

Laser reduces hair that’s already there it doesn’t switch off future hormonal signals that stimulate new growth.

Conditions like PCOS, thyroid imbalances, or perimenopause can continue producing new hair growth after laser hair removal, even in areas that were successfully treated, simply because the hormonal driver is still active.

This isn’t a treatment failure. It’s a different problem layered on top of the original one. If you’re noticing new hair in previously treated areas, it’s worth getting hormone levels checked rather than assuming the laser “stopped working.”

5. Skipping Pre- and Post-Session Care

What you do around your sessions affects how well the laser can do its job. Waxing or plucking between sessions removes the very follicle the laser needs to target, effectively cancelling out that session’s progress: shaving is the only hair removal method that should be used between appointments.

Sun exposure before or after a session increases melanin competition in the skin, which can reduce the laser’s precision and increase the risk of uneven results.

These aren’t minor footnotes they’re often the difference between a patient who sees smooth, consistent laser hair removal results and one who doesn’t.

6. Unrealistic Expectations Around “Permanent”

Laser hair reduction is exactly that a reduction, not a permanent erasure for every single patient.

Most people see 70-90% reduction in hair density and thickness after a full session series, with remaining hair typically finer, sparser, and slower-growing. A small percentage of hair can remain active regardless of technology, particularly in hormonally influenced areas like the chin or jawline.

I always set this expectation upfront, because patients who understand this walk away satisfied with genuinely excellent results while patients expecting total, forever hairlessness sometimes feel let down by an outcome that’s actually clinically very good.

7. Treatment Wasn’t Personalised to You

This is the one that ties everything else together. Skin tone, hair colour and thickness, area being treated, hormonal background, and even medication use all affect how a laser should be calibrated for you specifically.

A generic, one-setting-for-everyone approach across a clinic is where a lot of underwhelming results come from.

At RasaDerm, every laser hair removal treatment plan is built around your specific combination of these factors, adjusted session to session based on how your skin and hair are actually responding not a fixed protocol applied to everyone in the room.

The Real Laser Hair Reduction Benefits, When It’s Done Right

When laser hair removal is matched to the right technology, spaced correctly, and paired with realistic expectations, the benefits are substantial: significantly reduced hair density, finer regrowth, less ingrown hair, and freedom from the constant cycle of shaving and waxing.

It’s one of the most effective long-term investments you can make for smooth skin but only when it’s approached as the structured, multi-session process it actually is.

If your results from a previous laser hair removal treatment haven’t matched what you were told to expect, it’s worth getting a proper assessment before assuming the technology doesn’t work for you.

Often, it’s not the laser it’s everything around it that needed adjusting.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many laser hair removal sessions will I actually need?

Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart, though this varies by area, hair type, and hormonal background.

2. Why is hair still growing after laser hair removal?

This is usually due to hair being in a resting growth phase during earlier sessions, an underlying hormonal driver, or a laser not calibrated correctly for your skin and hair type.

3. Is laser hair removal effective on all skin tones?

Effectiveness depends heavily on the technology used. Multi-wavelength platforms like the Special Edition of Soprano Titanium are designed to work safely and effectively across a broader range of skin tones than older, single-wavelength lasers.

4. Is laser hair removal actually permanent?

It’s best understood as long-term hair reduction rather than permanent removal, most patients see 70-90% reduction, with remaining hair notably finer and slower-growing.
