What Is Pigmentation?

Pigmentation stands for the skin colouration that occurs when melanin functions as a pigment that melanocytes create through their production process. Natural pigmentation colours the skin, but abnormal melanin levels result in its discolouration and uneven pigmentation with dark spots. The pigmentation develops from inflammation as well as hormonal changes along with inherited traits and sun exposure.

To What Extent Does Pigmentation Occur Naturally

Age-related changes, together with exposure to sunlight and hormonal fluctuations, cause natural variations in skin pigmentation. Most pigmentations tend to stay permanently, while some fade away naturally. People generally view excessive pigmentation as a cosmetic issue because it develops as an inherent skin response to external and internal triggers.

Pigmentation Types
Melasma

The majority of melasma cases appear as dark brown or greyish discolourations on the face where the nose meets the upper lip and on the forehead and cheeks. The condition commonly results from hormonal shifts together with pregnancy or birth control pills and sun exposure. People who have darker tones, together with women, experience this condition more frequently. The management of melasma requires both targeted treatments and sun protection methods.

Hyperpigmentation Following Inflammation (PIH)

PIH develops when black patches appear on the skin after inflammatory skin injuries, including acne, burns, or cuts. During the healing process it produces excessive melanin, which leads to its appearance. People with darker skin tones face a higher risk of PIH, which requires several months for resolution. The healing process of PIH can be accelerated through combination therapy of brightening agents with laser treatment and chemical peels.

Solar Lentigines, Or Sunspots

The skin develops sunspots, which are also known as liver spots or age spots, when it stays under constant sunlight over an extended period. These small dark brown spots develop on areas of the face, hands, and shoulders that experience frequent sun exposure. Laser treatment along with skin-brightening treatments serves as a possible solution to treat these age-related spots that mostly affect older people.

Freckles

Freckles appear as small pale brown marks on the skin, which develop through a combination of sun exposure and inherited genetic traits. Freckles become more noticeable when it receives UV radiation exposure, mainly affecting people with pale skin. People who want to reduce their freckles often turn to chemical peels or laser treatments, although freckles remain harmless.
